REMINDER: This article is not a tutorial on applying and using statistics, but simply is a functional instruction on using the CESP documents themselves.

The Variable MSA section is predominantly set out as a Crossed Gage R&R Type 2 analysis. It does dwell into areas of an expanded report also. It does not perform Type 1 analysis.

Open the Variable MSA named file. Once opened, ensure that the “Data Entry” tab is selected.

  • The yellow highlighted cells indicate information that needs to be added.
  • MSA Tester is the name of the person conducting or overseeing the MSA study.
  • Test Item is not mandatory and are for reference only, if appropriate. This is the description of the item being measured.
  • Date is the date the study is completed.
  • Trials is how many time each item will be measured by each tester (minimum 2)
  • Testers is how many operators / testers are involved in the study (the ones who will be performing test measurements for each item)
  • Items is how many parts/items are being tested. (this is a maximum of 10 parts)
  • USL is the Upper Specification Limit for the item. This is set by the customer or by process parameters/targets if the customer view is not applicable. Refer back to your Voice of The Customer exercise. Adversely the LSL is the Lower Specification Limit for the item.
  • Random Order Selection can be used to create a random "run order" column to help randomise measurements for the study. There a 5 possible random orders to choose from. You should select a new random order after each trial.

Once this section has been completed, scroll down to the data entry section as shown in Figure 14

Here, the measurements from the study, as instructed by your Capella Trainer, should be entered in to the grid. The mean values of each operator.

Once all the data has been entered, validate the test by checking the status box below the data entry section. If all measurements have been inputted, the status will be Green and indicate next steps. If there are measurements missing or the settings in step 1 have been incorrectly set, a RED error message will appear.

Once validated select the Summary Report tab at the bottom of the sheet. This will then display the a summary report for the study. Full explanations on interpreting these reports will be provided by your Capella Trainer during the formal training sessions.

Figure 15 - Variable MSA Summary Report

The summary report, provides the facility for the assessor to print the report with all details included.

Depending upon the results, the text on the right side will change to highlight the status of the study and the text at the lower part of the page will also highlight the study status, (Pass, Fail, Caution/Marginal).

Each of the graphs will all automatically change as the MSA is completed on the previous tab.  The document also includes plenty of guidance for key deductions.

The next tab named Variation Report displays the Variation analysis within the study and again will highlight whether it is a pass or fail.

The next tab named Expanded Report gives statistical values including control limits for the data in the study and also shows part-to-part variation.
